Glenbeigh/Glencar 1-16 Glenflesk 2-13

Glenbeigh/Glencar welcomed Glenflesk in round 8 of the county league, the Glenflesk supporters turned up in their droves to support their team where a smaller than usual crowd were there to cheer on the locals on a beautiful summers evening.

An early burst up the field by Pa Kilkenny resulted in a fine opening score from the lively Adrain O’Connor and this was quickly followed up by a Darran O’Sullivan point. Glenflesk where awarded a close in free and the ever-reliable Darragh Roche made no mistake tapping the ball over the bar to register Glenflesk’s first score. Glenbeigh/Glencar were dominant in most positions and another Darran O’Sullivan point put the home side up by 3pts to 1 after 10mins play. Glenflesk notched their second point when centre forward Michael OShea kicked a fine score, from the resulting kick out Jack Brosnan raced up the field on one of his trademark runs and slotted the ball over the bar. A great score by Fergal Griffin was then followed up by another impressive run by jack who punched the ball over for another fine score. Full forward Patrick Darcy pulled a point back for the visitors; however, a fine point from corner back Sean Roche kept the lead to 4 points. When Darran O’Sullivan put over a free and Adrain O’Connor kicked a great point, it looked like the home side were well on their way to victory leading by 9 pts to 3pts with 20mins gone. Glenbeigh/Glencar were playing superb football moving the ball at speed into the forwards who were all on top of their game, however It was at this point that Glenbeigh/Glencar showed naivety, instead of continuing with fast ball into the forwards they decided to play gun ho football attacking in droves leaving large spaces for the dangerous Glenflesk forwards, this resulted in three unanswered points from danger man Darragh Roche reducing Glenbeigh/Glencar’s lead down to 3pts. On the stroke of half time, Colin McGillycuddy kicked a great point leaving the half time score at 10pts to 0-6pts in the home sides favour.

From the throw in Glenflesks wing forward Jeff O’Donoghue kicked a great score to bring it back to a three pt game, two points from tallies man Darran O’Sullivan extended the home sides lead the second point was the result of a superb team move. Glenflesk then hit a purple patch kicking back with two points in quick succession Kenny Cronin & Patrick Darcy, the Glenbeigh/Glencar backs were now under fierce pressure and two outstanding saves by Rory O’Connor kept the home side in the game. Rory would not look out of place on any county team, on several occasions especially this year he has produced unbelievable saves and is one of the main reasons Glenbeigh/Glencar are near the top of the division. Caolim Teahan who was having a quiet game for his standards kicked a massive point to put the home side up 13pts to 9pts. From the resulting kick out veteran, Stephen O’Sullivan won the breaking ball and slipped a pass to Caolim Teahan who then carried the ball into the Glenflesk half passing to Jason McKenna who did very well to get a fist to the ball sending it into the back of the Glenflesk net. At this point many of the home supporters were confident of the two pts however Glenflesk had other ideas, some scrappy play saw Glenflesk overturn the ball and a total lapse in concentration by the Glenbeigh/Glencar backs saw Glenflesk’s Ian Roche free and he made no mistake hitting the back of the net giving Rory O’Connor no chance. With only 3 pts between the teams the game was very much in the balance, a great run and score from Darran O’Sullivan should have steadied the ship but Glenflesk to their credit battled on with points from Darragh Roche and Jeff O’Donoghue to put just 2 points between the teams, a Tommy Cahill free restored the three point advantage with 5mins remaining. Glenflesk once again dug deep and produced a fine goal from man of the match Darragh Roche (1-7) to level up the game, Glenflesk’s tails were up and within seconds they were in front with Patrick Darcy kicking a great point. Things looked ominous for the home team as they were a point down with only seconds remaining, just when it looked like a defeat for the home team up stepped former county star Darren O’Sullivan, Darran turned back the clock with an impressive solo run like days of old and finished it off with a superb point right at the death.

A draw was probably a fair result but the Glenbeigh/Glencar lads will be kicking themselves as they left a 6 point advantage slip through their hands, final score Glenbeigh/Glencar 1-16 Glenflesk 2-13
